Bears Win a Battle Against Texas
March 12, 2007
BERKELEY - The No. 6 California women's tennis team defeated Texas, 6-1, Monday afternoon at the Hellman Tenins Center. Although the Golden Bears only lost one match, their top two players, Susie Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor had to make tremendous comebacks to earn their victories.
Playing on the No. 1 court, 25th-ranked Fodor dropped the first set to Vanja Corovic, 6-3. In the second set, Fodor was on the brink of losing the match when Corovic held a 5-3 lead. Although the team victory was already won by Cal, Fodor refused to quit and battled back to win the set, 7-5. In the third-set tiebreaker, Fodor and Corovic fought to an 8-8 tie. The reigning Pac-10 singles champion won the next two points to take the match.
'Fodor's match was a demonstration, regardless of what the score is at that time, each person on the team wants to win,' Cal head coach Jan Brogan said. 'She actually played better when she was behind than when she was ahead. She never quit the whole match. It didn't matter that the team had already won. She still wanted to compete and still wanted to win. The final outcome was just outstanding.'
On the No. 2 court, Babos struggled as well in the opening set of her match against Petra Dizdar. Dizdar was controlling the set with a 5-1 lead. Babos, currently ranked No. 4 in the ITA singles rankings, came all the way back to take a 6-5 lead and eventually earn the 7-6 win. The reigning NCAA singles champion carried her momentum into the second set, as she quickly took care of Dizdar, 6-1. The win for Babos clinched the team victory for the Bears (12-3).
Rebounding after a tough loss yesterday, No. 16 Nina Henkel won the first singles match of the day, which was a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sarah Lancaster. She was followed by junior Cristina Visico, who took down Marija Milic, 6-2, 6-2.
Junior Marion Ravelojaona breezed through the first set of her match against Ristine Olson, winning by the score of 6-1. In the second set, Olson put up a good fight. After Olson took an early 2-0 lead, Ravelojaona came back to take a 5-3 lead, only to see Olson jump back ahead, 6-5. Ravelojaona fought back to tie it at six and later won the tiebreaker and the set, 7-6.
In doubles, the third-ranked team of Babos and Fodor wasted no time in getting the first win of the day on the board for Cal. They quickly took care of business against Dizdar and Olson posting an 8-1 victory.
Sophomores Claire Ilcinkas and Bojana Bobusic clinched the point with an 8-6 victory over Lancaster and Courtney Zauft. Ilcinkas and Bobusic held a 5-2 lead only to see the Longhorn duo come back to tie the match at five. The Bear tandem would hang on to win the deciding match.
On the No. 2 court, Henkel and Ravelojaona struggled early against Corovic and Milic. The Texas tandem was winning 6-2, with the match seemingly in hand. Henkel and Ravelojaona made a few adjustments and went on to win the next six consecutive games to take the match, 8-6.
Cal completes its five-match homestand on Saturday, March 17, when it hosts TCU at 12 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Center.
