Eneroth Among UNLV Invite Leaders
March 12, 2007
BOULDER CITY, Nevada -- - Washington State sophomore Amy Eneroth fired a three-under par 69 to lead the Cougars after the first day of the UNLV Rebel Invitational at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Enroth enters the second day of the three-day competition tied for fourth but just two strokes behind leader Rachel Newren from Brigham Young University, who shot a 67 Monday to lead the 96 golfers.
'Amy was awesome for 16 holes,' said WSU head coach Walt Williams. 'She had an eagle and a bunch of birdies, but slipped a little on the last two holes with a pair of bogeys. A lot of golfers struggled with the final hole, which is over 400 yards and a par four.'
Three other Cougar golfers, Tracy Broders, Jessica Black and Diana Hong, all shot 77 on the opening day over the par 72, 6,153-yard course. Brooke Henderson was two strokes behind the Cougar trio after an opening round 79, putting her just seven strokes over par.
Williams Broders and Black had solid rounds and Hong, although starting slowly, rallied with birdies on two of the last three holes.
'This is our first time on this course and I would expect the women to do even better the next two days as they have a better feel for the course,' Williams said. 'The field is tightly bunched and if we improve Tuesday we can be in the mix at the top.'
