March 12, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC junior Kaes Van't Hof has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Mar. 5-Mar. 11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Van't Hof went 4-0 in singles and doubles last week as USC took out a pair of Top-20 teams to run their record to 11-0, the best start for the Trojans since 1988. USC held off 17th-ranked Rice, 4-3 last Wednesday, then upset sixth-ranked rival UCLA, 6-1 on Friday. Van't Hof provided the clinching singles wins in both matches.
Against the Owls of Rice, Van't Hof and doubles partner Robert Farah defeated the team of Jason Mok and Christoph Muller, 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, positioning the Trojans to take the pivotal doubles point, 2-1. Van't Hof then proceeded on to singles, where he battled Filip Paroci in the No. 3 singles slot in the longest match of the day. With the dual tied, 3-3, Van't Hof closed out his match, 6-4 in the third set, to put USC over the top.
Two days later the Trojans welcomed the Bruins for the first of two heated duals between the two foes. Van't Hof and Farah again scored the first win in doubles for USC, defeating Haythem Abid and Mathieu Dehaine, 8-4 in the No. 2 spot, and USC would add a win at No. 3 to secure the doubles point. Despite the 6-1 win, USC's final three singles victories all went the full three sets. Van't Hof earned the clinching fourth point by upsetting UCLA's Chris Surapol, ranked 47th in the Fila Rankings, 7-5 in the third set.
Van't Hof, a native of Newport Beach, Calif., has now won 10-straight dual matches and is 19-3 in singles overall. The Trojans (11-0) hit the road next week, traveling to NCAA Tournament host Georgia for an 11 a.m. match on Wednesday, Mar. 14. USC then travels to play the Arizona schools over the weekend in the first Conference matces of the year.
This is Van't Hof's second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor this season and the fourth all-time for USC. Player of the Week honors have alternated between UCLA and USC through the first six weeks this year.
