March 13, 2007
COUGAR TRACK & FIELD OPEN OUTDOOR SEASON: The Washington State University track and field teams kick-off the outdoor season at the Baldy Castillo Invitational Meet at Sun Angel Stadium/Joe Selleh Track on the Arizona State campus in Tempe...the hammer event is the lone event on the first day of the two-day meet...all other events begin at noon with running events taking place in the cooler evening temperatures with the high hurdles starting at 5:50 p.m...WSU competitors will mostly be those who have events that cannot be duplicated indoors - hurdles, steeplechase 4x100m relay and all the throwing events...results will be posted at www.TheSunDevils.com...several other Cougs will be competing at the Dusty Lane Invite at Spokane Community College Saturday...this is spring break for the WSU students.
COUGARS AT INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: Three Cougars competed and three returned as All-Americans...Diana Pickler was the runner-up in the pentathlon and her sister Julie placed ninth, both are seniors from Sachse, Texas...Diana broke Julie's school record with 4,339 points as reached PR marks in the shot put and 800m race...Julie placed ninth with 4,046 points...this fourth All-America certificates for both Diana and Julie...Tyson Byers pole vaulted a PR height of 18-feet, 1/2 inch (5.50m) for third place...the fifth-year senior from Spokane Valley, Wash., earned his second All-America honors...this was the second time Byers had reached a PR at a national championship as his previous WSU-best of 17-8 1/2 (5.40m) came at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships where he finished fifth.
NCAA REGIONAL QUALIFYING: The goal for the WSU competitors in the outdoor season is to reach NCAA Regional Qualifying marks...the top-five individual finishers from each regional event automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, June 6-9, at Sacramento...the only events that still have national provisional and automatic national qualifying marks are the heptathlon and decathlon, and the 10,000m races.
NO QUALIFYING MARKS NEEDED FOR PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: This is the second year the Pacific-10 Conference will forego its own set of qualifying marks for its championship meet...instead, a maximum of 24 women and 24 men may be entered from each school at the head coach's discretion...outdoor and indoor seasons will be used for descending order lists and seeding into the championship heats/flights.
EASY VIEWING OF PAC-10 PERFORMANCE LISTS: The Pacific-10 Conference performance descending order lists can be viewed online at www.directathletics.com...click on Performance Lists and under Current Seasons, click again on Pac-10 Outdoor Track & Field Performance Lists.
