Cal Plays California Victory at College of Alameda
March 14, 2007
BERKELEY - California will play the California Victory in an exhibition game at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the College of Alameda's soccer-specific FieldTurf stadium. The Victory, an expansion team in the USL's First Division, will be playing its first game of any kind against the Golden Bears, who are coming off an appearance in the third round of the NCAA College Cup.
The Victory's roster includes former Bears midfielder Mike Muñoz, who started in 60 of 63 games at Cal from 2001-04. More recently, Muñoz played for Chivas USA in MLS.
'I'm definitely looking forward to playing Cal,' Muñoz said. 'It's always a pleasure coming back to the Bay Area. I've kept in good contact with everyone over there and I know they're all very excited.'
'Cal has always been a very fit, very physical team,' he added. 'It's also one of the most technically solid teams on the West Coast. It's a great program and a great tradition, and it's always going to be a tough game against them.'
Tickets will be available at the gate on game day and will cost $7 for adults and $3 for under-18s. For directions, go to http://www.bayoaks.net/fields/col_alam.html.
On March 9 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., Cal lost 3-2 in an exhibition game to the New York Red Bulls of MLS, with Bears junior forward Javier Ayala-Hil tallying a goal and an assist.
After the Red Bulls built a 2-0 lead, Ayala-Hil set up Cal newcomer Servando Carrasco for a 41st-minute goal that made the score 2-1. New York scored in the 62nd minute to take a 3-1 lead, and Ayala-Hil scored three minutes later for the Bears to make the final score 3-2.
