Freshman Austin Hurt Paces WSU At Houston Tourney
March 17, 2007
LAREDO, Texas - Freshman Austin Hurt fired three consistent rounds at the Laredo Country Club in leading Washington State through the 54-hole Border Olympics that concluded Saturday. Hurt shot a 220 with rounds of 73, 74 and 73. He finished in a tie for 32nd with his four-over par total.
WSU finished 12th in the team standings, with Lamar University posting a 835 total to take top honors. They were followed in the team standings by Baylor, Vanderbilt, Texas-Arlington and host Houston.
'We didn't play particularly well today, but we are hitting more good shots and fewer bad shots,' offered WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. 'We didn't make puts and we saw more water than we usually see. About half the holes have water.'
Chris Collins shot a final round 72 to finish one stroke behind Hurt at 221. WSU's first-round leader Jordan Madison finished at 222 after shooting a 70 during the opening round. Nick Grigsby closed out with a 233 and Kevin Tucker was one stroke behind at 234.
'Collins started to come around today,' said Williams. 'He putted poorly and still shot a 72. The other guys are trying to get their swings fined-tuned.'
Madison, a senior, had the best round of the tournament for the Cougars, but after a 73 in the second round, he slipped to 79 for the final 18-holes over the 7,241-yard course. Collins closed with rounds of 73 and 72 after posting a 76 early Friday.
WSU's next men's competition will be the Duck Invitational March 26-27 at the Eugene Country Club.
