UCLA Baseball Dropped by San Diego State, 12-6

San Diego - The UCLA baseball team suffered a 12-6 defeat to San Diego State on Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Bruin offense registered six runs off 14 hits and was led by first baseman Tim Stewart's 2-for-5, 3-RBI performance.
Bruin left-hander Tim Murphy (0-1) was charged the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) off six hits in 2.0 innings. San Diego State right-hander Bruce Billings (2-0) struck out four and walked one, allowing five runs (three earned) off 10 hits in 5.0 innings. Six Bruins posted multi-hit efforts and center fielder Brady Dolan led the team with two runs scored.
UCLA (8-12) opened the first inning with a bases-clearing, one-out double to left-center field by Stewart. The Aztecs (14-11) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to trail, 3-2. Shortstop Troy Hanzawa belted a two-out triple to center field and scored on a home run to left by third baseman Nick Romero.
San Diego State took a 6-3 lead in the second inning. With one out and runners at first and second, first baseman Joe Spiers lined an RBI single to right, plating catcher Frank LoNigro and sending second baseman Garett Green to third. Center fielder Brandon Glover's groundout brought home Green and allowed Spiers to take second. Right fielder Josh Chasse reached on a fielding error by pitcher Tim Murphy. Spiers stole third and scored on a wild throw down the line by catcher Ryan Babineau. Hanzawa's single to left field scored Chasse from second base.
The Aztecs added two more runs in the third inning to assume an 8-3 advantage. Designated hitter Brian Lucas was hit by a pitch, stole second base and took third on an error by Crawford. Left fielder Cameron Johnson walked, before LoNigro brought home Lucas with a sacrifice fly to center. Johnson scored from second on a two-out base hit to center.
UCLA cut the Aztecs' lead to 8-4 with a sacrifice fly by second baseman Alden Carrithers, who brought home right fielder Gabe Cohen. San Diego State's advantage swelled to 10-4 when the Aztecs tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Bruins responded with a run by left fielder Mickey Weisser in the top of the sixth. San Diego State assumed a 12-5 lead with two additional runs in the sixth inning. UCLA cut its deficit in half when Brady Dolan scored after leading off the seventh inning with a base hit.
The Bruins and Aztecs conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. UCLA left-hander Gavin Brooks makes his sixth-consecutive Sunday start, and San Diego State sends left-hander Lance Sewell to the mound.
