UCLA Baseball Edged by San Diego State, 5-3, in Series Finale

San Diego - The UCLA baseball team came up short at San Diego State on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Aztecs at Tony Gwynn Stadium. San Diego State took a 3-1 lead in the second inning and UCLA came within one run, scoring two runs in the seventh to cut the Aztecs' advantage to 4-3.
UCLA left-hander Gavin Brooks (1-3) allowed five runs (four earned) off nine hits in a career-high 6.1 innings and was tagged with the loss. The Vista, Calif., native struck out five Aztecs and issued one walk. San Diego State left-hander Lance Sewell (4-1) allowed one run off four hits in 6.0 innings, striking out five Bruins and issuing five walks to earn his fourth victory of the season. Aztec right-hander Stephen Strasburg picked up his third save.
The Bruins got on the board first, scoring a run off three hits with two outs in the second inning. Right fielder Gabe Cohen and left fielder Cody Decker bounced consecutive hits through the left side for base hits. Catcher Ryan Babineau followed with a base hit up the middle on a 1-and-2 count to bring home Cohen.
San Diego State responded with a three-run second inning to assume a 3-1 advantage. Designated hitter Brian Lucas singled to right with one out and advanced to third on left fielder Cameron Johnson's single to center. Second baseman Garett Green plated Lucas and sent Johnson to third with a base hit to right. Catcher Chris Anderson doubled to right when UCLA right fielder Gabe Cohen lost his footing, allowing Johnson to score and Green to take third. Center fielder Josh Chasse plated Green with a two-out single to left.
The Aztecs added one run with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Anderson drew a walk and took third base on first baseman Joe Spiers bloop single to right. Center fielder Brandon Glover placed a bunt down the third base line to score Anderson.
The Bruins cut the Aztecs' lead to 4-3 using two runs off two hits, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh. Third baseman Eddie Murray reached on an infield single and moved to second on second baseman Alden Carrithers' base hit to right. Each runner advanced to third base and second base, respectively, on a wild pitch. Pinch-hitter Mickey Weisser brought home Murray with a groundout to second, and shortstop Brandon Crawford's sacrifice fly to left scored Carrithers.
San Diego State scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to assume a 5-3 lead when Spiers advanced from third on a wild pitch by right-hander Brant Rustich.
UCLA returns to action Saturday, March 24, when the Bruins open a three-game series against Pacific at Jackie Robinson Stadium. First pitch Saturday is slated for 6 p.m. The Bruins and Tigers continue their series Sunday and Monday at 1 p.m.
Game Notes: Right-hander Brant Rustich struck out two in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief...left fielder Cody Decker made a sensational diving catch in foul territory, snaring a looping fly ball off the bat of Troy Hanzawa in the fifth inning...UCLA stranded two runners on base in each of the second, third and fourth innings and grounded into an inning-ending double play in the fifth and eighth innings...UCLA was last swept by San Diego State in 1977 (Feb. 11-12)...last season the Bruins swept the Aztecs at Jackie Robinson Stadium (March 17-19, 2006).
