UCLA's Riza Zalameda Named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week
March 19, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA junior Riza Zalameda has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Mar. 12-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Bruins' star racked up a 6-0 mark this past week, going 3-0 at both No. 1 singles and doubles in UCLA victories over No. 25 Baylor, Arizona and No. 21 Arizona State. All three of Zalameda's singles wins were against ranked opponents.
Last Tuesday, Zalameda and the Bruins began their week with a 5-2 win at home over Baylor. Zalameda's win was the highlight, as she defeated 2005 NCAA Singles Champion Zuzana Zemenova, 6-4, 6-2. Zemenova is currently ranked 38th in singles.
Friday, UCLA swept aside Arizona, with Zalameda overcoming a first set loss to 110th-ranked Danielle Steinberg to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Saturday's match against Arizona State looked to be a toss-up on paper, but the 22nd-ranked Bruins pulled off the minor upset in convincing 6-1 fashion. Zalameda led the way again, defeating ASU's 65th-ranked Sabrina Capannolo, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. Zalameda also had a huge win on the doubles court, as she and Yasmin Schnack teamed up to take down the nation's sixth-ranked doubles tandem, Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke, 8-5 to clinch the doubles point for UCLA. Zalameda and Schnack also had wins over the Bears and Wildcats.
The Bruins (11-5, 2-0 Pac-10) have the coming week off. Their next match is Mar. 30 against Oregon in Eugene, which begins a string of five-straight Conference duals.
This is the second career Player of the Week award for Zalameda, and the second all-time for UCLA. Zalameda becomes the first repeat winner this season, also winning on Feb. 12.
