Cougars Slug Way To 13-2 Victory Over Gonzaga
March 20, 2007
SPOKANE, Wash. - Paul Gran and Cody Bartlett each had three-run home runs to lead a 17-hit Cougar attack as Washington State University picked up a 13-2 victory over Gonzaga in a nonconference game Tuesday afternoon at the Patterson Baseball Complex.
With the win the Cougars improve to 13-7 on the season while Gonzaga falls to 14-11 and sees its four-game win streak come to an end.
The Cougars struck in the top of the second as Zach Borba's two-out single through the left side brought home Jim Murphy with the games first run. The Cougars then exploded for eight runs in the fifth as they sent 12 men to the plate and took advantage of two Bulldog errors. Gran connected for his first home run of the season, a three-run shot over the wall in left-center to break the game open. Greg Lagreid and Borba each added two-run doubles as WSU jumped to a 9-0 lead midway through the game.
That was more than enough for Lambert who went through the Gonzaga lineup with little resistance. He retired the first seven batters he faced and sent down the side in order four times. Lambert threw 93 pitches in his seven and 2/3 innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Lambert improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.
Gonzaga broke into the scoring column in the seventh as Darin Holcomb doubled to lead off the inning then came home on Dustin Colclough's sacrifice fly to center. The Bulldogs added another run in the eighth courtesy of an Evan Wells sacrifice fly that scored Aaron McGuinness, who led off the inning with a double.
With the game well in hand the Cougars added four more runs in the ninth as Matt Fanelli had a pinch-hit RBI that scored Nick Hall and Bartlett capped the offensive outburst with a three-run shot deep over the wall in left.
Twelve different Cougars had hits on the afternoon with Gran, Borba, Bartlett, Murphy and Jared Prince each collecting multi-hit games. Gran, Borba and Bartlett each drove in three. Freshman Michael Ratigan closed out the game on the mound for WSU, working the final 1 1/3 innings, retiring all four batters he faced.
Bulldog starter Chris Highmark suffered the loss as he lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. He was the first of four Gonzaga pitchers on the afternoon. Offensively the Bulldogs managed six hits with McGuinness the only player collecting more than one.
The Cougars return to Bailey-Brayton Field this Friday when they open Pacific-10 Conference play against the Washington Huskies. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
