Masaniai Garners Pac-10 Player of the Week Honors
March 20, 2007
Berkeley - Freshman Bernice Masaniai of the California softball team was selected as the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for the period ending Mar. 19, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Tuesday.
Masaniai provided much of the offensive output for the Golden Bears last week as Cal went 4-2 with a third place finish at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational in Honolulu. This is the first career Player of the Week honor for Masaniai, and the 58th Player/Pitcher of the Week all-time for Cal. Masaniai is the third freshman to win conference Player of the Week honors this season, joining Oregon's Jennifer Salling and UCLA's Megan Langenfeld.
Masaniai (Stanton), helped Cal to its biggest win of the season, a 10-6 upset of 10th-ranked Baylor on Mar. 14, after going 3-for-5 with a two-run home run. It was Cal's first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Cal only managed two hits in Thursday night's late game vs. Liberty. But Masaniai's was the one that mattered the most as her solo home run in the second inning proved to the game winner in Cal's 1-0 victory over the Lady Flames. In the third-place game on Saturday versus Nevada, Masaniai was solid once again, connecting for three hits on four plate appearances with a pair of RBI. All three hits were doubles, as Cal went on to win, 7-4.
For the week, Masaniai produced a .526 average (10-for-19) with two runs scored, four doubles, two home runs, and five RBI. She registered a slugging percentage of 1.053 and boasted an on-base percentage of .571. She raised her batting average 51 points as well during the tournament.Masaniai, who currently has a ten-game hitting streak, has accumulated a .341 batting average with 21 runs and 19 RBI this season.
Cal (22-12) heads east this week to play its last non-conference tournament before league play begins. The Bears will partake in the Women 4 Women Softball Invitational hosted by Louisville, Mar. 23-25.
