TEAMS PUT FINISHING TOUCHES ON NON-CONFERENCE PLAY

Less than two weeks remain before Pac-10 play opens up for all eight teams on Friday, Mar. 30 ... the schedule is light this week, although every Conference team plays at least once ... No. 16 WASHINGTON faces Utah today in Seattle, then rests until the Conference opener ... No. 10 STANFORD and No. 14 UCLA, which have not played since Mar. 11 and Mar. 13, respectively, take the field again this week. The Bruins play two on Sunday at Cal Poly, while Stanford hosts the Stanford Invitational II from Mar. 24-25 ... No. 12 OREGON ascended to the top of the Pac-10 standings this week with a 30-3 record after going 6-0 last week in the Cascade Clash. The Ducks and 21st-ranked OREGON STATE alternate double-headers with Idaho State and Utah Valley State this weekend ... No. 5 ARIZONA, runner-up at last week's prestigious Judi Garman Classic, welcomes New Mexico for a three-game weekend set ... other remaining non-conference tourney action finds CALIFORNIA in Louisville, Ky. for the Women 4 Women Softball Invitational, and No. 7 ARIZONA STATE hosting the Diamond Devil Invitational, this Friday through Sunday.

TEAM BY TEAM NOTES

ARIZONA (21-7): The Wildcats advanced to the championship game of the Judi Garman Classic last weekend, finishing second to Oklahoma. The Sooners took two from Arizona, but the Wildcats posted big wins over No. 9/9 Michigan, No. 17/16 Louisiana-Lafayette, North Carolina State and Pacific ... junior Taryne Mowatt went 4-1 with two complete game shutouts and a combined shutout to earn Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors ... Mowatt leads the Pac-10 in strikeouts with 217 ... freshman pitcher Sarah Akamine made the biggest mark at the plate in her young career, going off for 12 RBI in just four games last week. Akamine's first two collegiate home runs both came against ULL, and both were grand slams, the first Wildcat to hit two slams in the same game ... senior Chelsie Mesa had her league-best 22-game hitting streak snapped on Saturday in an 0-for-4 performance against Michigan ... Mesa's streak was the longest for a Wildcat since Autumn Champion's 25-consecutive games in 2003 ... senior Caitlin Lowe is currently tied for first in the Pac-10 with a .494 average. She has raised her career batting average to .463 and sits third on the career Pac-10 batting average charts, three percentage points behind first and second.

ARIZONA STATE (29-5): The Sun Devils went 2-3 at the Judi Garman Classic last week, losing two extra-inning heartbreakers to No. 17/16 Louisiana-Lafayette and North Carolina State ... junior ace Katie Burkhart achieved perfection for the first time in her career on Thursday vs. Notre Dame, setting all 21 Fighting Irish down in order in the program's first perfect game since Erica Beach against Cal in 1999. Burkhart K'd 13 without allowing a hit or walk in ASU's 3-0 win ... Burkhart now has 836 career strikeouts, placing her second behind only Kirsten Voak, her current pitching coach ... senior Bianca Cruz (39 RBI) is the league's second-leading run producer. A former transfer from San Diego State, Cruz had only 11 RBI in her Sun Devil career until this season ... Arizona State has five players with at least four home runs. Kaitlin Cochran leads the way with seven, followed by junior Rhiannon Baca and Cruz with six apiece, freshman Caylyn Carlson with five, and freshman Megan Elliott with four.

CALIFORNIA (22-12): The Golden Bears earned third place last week in the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational in Honolulu, defeating Nevada, 7-4 in the final game ... Cal picked up its first win over a ranked opponent with a 10-6 win over No. 14/10 Baylor in the opening game. Freshman Bernice Masaniai did the damage for Cal in the game, hitting 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI ... Masaniai lifted Cal to a win over Liberty on Thursday. Her solo homer in the second inning was the only run in a 1-0 Cal win ... Masaniai earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors for her prowess at the plate ... Cal had at least one home run from Mar. 9-15, a span of seven straight games ... the Bears had a season-high 18 hits vs. Baylor on Mar. 14 ... Masaniai has a current 10-game hitting streak ... Alex Sutton had a ten-game hitting streak (Mar. 3-14) ... Erika Racklin has scored 11 runs in her last nine games (Mar. 10-17) and has five multi-hit games since Mar. 9

OREGON (30-3): Oregon finished 6-0 at the Cascade Clash last week, sweeping doubleheaders against Utah State, Towson and South Dakota State...the Ducks improved their winning streak to seven games...Oregon's pitching duo of Melissa Rice and Alicia Cook combined to allow just one run in 34.0 innings on the mound...both went 3-0 on the mound, with Cook picking up her 16th consecutive decision...she struck out 11 batters in the tournament, improving her season total to 78...Rice did not allow a run in her 19 innings over three starts...she currently leads the staff with a 0.71 ERA...the combo's ERA of 0.75 also leads the Pac-10...offensively, Oregon hit .468 from the plate in the Cascade Clash, led by freshman shortstop Jennifer Salling and Ann Marie Topps...Topps, who leads the team and the Conference with 13 home runs this season, hit .438 at the tournament (11-for-21) with three home runs...her 40 RBIs also lead the team...Salling hit .667 at the tournament, with seven of her 10 hits resulting in extra bases (three doubles, three triple and one home run)

OREGON STATE (20-10): The Beavers wrapped up a 5-1 week, including their home debut as part of the Cascade Clash ... OSU rolled through the first five games of the event, outscoring the opposition 37-6, but ran out of steam in their sixth game in three days, a 2-0 loss to Utah State ... 2006 All-American Cambria Miranda returned to her usual form over the six games, hitting a team-best .571 (12-for-21) with three doubles, three triples, nine RBI and eight runs scored. Miranda went 4-for-5 on Friday in OSU's 16-3 win over Towson to become just the 10th player in OSU history to recourd four hits in a single game ... Miranda's five triples are tied for the Pac-10 lead ... senior Brianne McGowan went 3-0 with two shutouts last week, moving her into a tie for second on the Beavers recordbooks with 31 career shutouts. The school record is 32 by Joan Harvey (1982-85) ... the Beaver pitching staff continues to keep OSU in every game. They have not allowed more than four runs in a game since Feb. 16 (24 games) and are second in the Conference with a 1.38 ERA ... Oregon State continues to flash the leather this season. They lead the Conference with a .979 fielding percentage, having made only 19 errors in 894 chances.

STANFORD (21-5): The Cardinal did not take the field last week. They resume play this Saturday and host the Stanford Invitational II where they will play Long Beach State and Ohio on Mar. 24 and Portland State and UC Davis on Mar. 25 ... despite the off-week sophomore Maddy Coon still leads the Pac-10 in doubles with 11. Coon ranked fifth in that category last season with 13 ... sophomore Missy Penna currently ranks in the Pac-10's top five in the following categories: wins (t3rd - 14), opposing batting average (2nd - .152), strikeouts (4th - 146), innings pitchd (5th - 103.1) and starts (3rd - 17).

UCLA (22-6): The Bruins played just once last week, a 1-0 win over Southern Utah on Tuesday, Mar. 13. In that game freshman Whitney Baker struck out a career-high 11 and gave up just two hits in the shutout. Senior Jaisa Creps drove in senior Jodie Legaspi for the game's only run ... UCLA returns to action this Sunday, Mar. 25, with a road double-header at Cal Poly ... the win extended UCLA's season-best winning streak to 10 games ... freshman Megan Langenfeld's 11-game hitting streak was snapped vs. Southern Utah ... UCLA batters continue to flex their muscles, as Bruins account for half of the top-10 in slugging percentage in the Pac-10. Kaila Shull leads the contingent with a slugging percentage of .747, followed by Langenfeld (.722), Lisa Dodd (.707), Krista Colburn (.663), and Legaspi (662) ... the Bruins have had four different pitchers earn victories this year, the most in the league.

WASHINGTON (21-7): The Huskies had a shaky 0-3 start to the Judi Garman Classic last week, before rebounding with three-straight shutouts over Pacific, No. 8/8 Texas and North Carolina State to win the consolation bracket ... junior Caitlin Noble no-hit the Longhorns in a 4-0 win Sunday, the second no-hitter of her career and 25th in Washingotn history. The only two Longhorns to reach base did so via error. Noble went seven innings, allowing no runs, hits or walks and striking out 11. Her previous no-hitter came on Feb. 26, 2005 vs. Kansas ... over the final three games of the Classic, UW outscored its opponents 15-0 ... the Huskies' four wins over ranked opponents are second in the Pac-10 to Arizona's six ... sophomore Marnie Koziol had her 15-game hitting streak snapped on Thursday in a 3-1 loss to Florida State ... the Huskies play just once this week, a home game vs. Utah today (Tuesday) before taking a respite. Their next games will be the opening Pac-10 series: Mar. 30 vs. Arizona and Mar. 31-Apr. 1 vs. Arizona State in Seattle.
