March 22, 2007
The Washington baseball team (11-9) opens the 2007 Pac-10 Conference season this weekend with a three-game series at Washington State (13-7).
The Huskies saw a nine-game winning streak snapped Wednesday when the Dawgs fell at Gonzaga, 12-0. A day before, the Huskies beat Portland, 14-5, in the first of five straight road games during spring break.
An internet-only audio broadcast of Friday's 5:30 p.m. game will air live on KKNW AM-1150. In the series opener, the Huskies will hand the start to sophomore left-hander Nick Haughian (2-2, 4.13 ERA). Last Friday, Haughian threw seven scoreless innings in a 7-0 win over Cal State Northridge. WSU is scheduled to start righty Wayne Daman Jr. (2-0, 2.05).
On Saturday, the first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Husky sophomore right-hander Jorden Merry (4-1, 1.60) will start for the Huskies. Merry entered the week as the Pac-10's leader in both earned run average and opponent batting average (.171). Last Saturday in a 2-1 win over Northridge, he had a streak of scoreless innings pitched broken at 22 and two-thirds. WSU will counter with lefty Matt Way (2-1, 7.45).
The Apple Cup of baseball wraps up Sunday with a 12 noon game at Bailey-Brayton Field. Husky sophomore southpaw Tyler Cheney (1-1, 3.86) will start against WSU right-hander Nick Ison (3-2, 5.60).
Both Saturday and Sunday's games will air live on radio (KKNW AM-1150) in the Seattle area. Those radio broadcasts can also be heard on gohuskies.com.
Last season, the Huskies and Cougars met on the final weekend of the regular season. Washington State picked up a win (3-2) in the series opener, but Washington took the next two (5-4 and 5-3) to earn a series victory. The last time the Huskies visited Pullman, in 2005, they swept a three-game series by scores of 17-5, 13-5 and 14-2.
The Huskies return home the following weekend (March 30-April 1) when they play host to 17th-ranked Arizona State in a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.
