Golfers Back in Action Mar. 26-27
March 23, 2007
The ninth-ranked UCLA men's golf team begins the Spring Quarter with a pair of tournaments featuring both its Gold and Blue Teams.
The Gold Team travels to the Oregon Duck Invitational, hosted by the Eugene Country Club and the Blue Team visits the Bakersfield Country Club for the second tournament of the season hosted by Cal State Bakersfield.
Both tournaments will be held Mar. 26-27.
All 10 Pac-10 teams will be competing at the Oregon event, which features a six-player, count four format. Top-ranked Stanford, sixth-ranked USC and No. 21 Arizona State will provide formidable competition for the UCLA Gold squad, which won its last event, the Southern Highlands Collegiate Invitational.
'We're looking forward to the trip to Eugene,' said Head Coach O. D Vincent. 'The Eugene Country Club is a great course and it will be nice to play an event there before we return in April to defend our Pac-10 title.'
The Blue Team returns to Bakersfield where it won the first invitational in February at Seven Oaks CC with a 54-hole score of 839 (-25). With six players traveling to Eugene, winning at Bakersfield will be difficult with four players -- senior Chris Heintz, junior Brandon Christianson and freshmen Charlie Harris and Jason Kang.
'This will be a good experience for our foursome,' said Assistant Coach Derek Freeman. 'A premium will be placed on players to make every shot count. Our guys are confident they can rise to the occasion.'
Lucas Lee, currently UCLA's highest ranked player (15th) after four straight Top 10 finishes, including a pair of victories in successive events (Mar. 5-11), was named GolfWorld Player of the Week on Mar. 16.
The Torrance HS graduate leads the Bruins in victories (2), scoring average (71.4), Top 10 finishes (6), rounds under par (9) and rounds under 70 (6). He boasts four career victories after winning twice as a freshman.
In other news, the golf program announced that the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, scheduled for Apr. 9-10 at Talking Stick GC in Scottsdale, AZ, has been deleted from the schedule. UCLA has replaced the schedule vacancy with a 54-hole dual match against Arizona at Tucson National on Apr. 7-8.
