Men's Tennis Tops In-State Rival Arizona, 6-1

TEMPE, Ariz.--The Arizona State Men's Tennis team defeated in-state rival Arizona, 6-1, Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. The Sun Devils improve to 9-6 on the season as the Wildcats drop to 5-10.

In singles, freshman Matt Brooklyn defeated Claudio Christen, 6-4, 6-4, playing in the no. 1 slot. Junior Juan Carlos Rebaza topped David Hezi 6-2, 6-1 and sophomore T.J. Bellama followed suit with 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jason Labrosse. Senior Nick Hegarty also pulled out a win for the Sun Devils with a 7-6, 6-4 defeat of Peter Zimmer of Arizona.

In doubles action, Arizona State's Wes Miller and Brooklyn defeated Christen and Hezi of Arizona, 8-6. Rebaza and Hegarty topped J. Labrosse and Zimmer, 9-7, in a tough match, while Bellama and Murilo Souza completed the sweep of the doubles play for the Sun Devils with a 9-8 victory over Bruno Alcala and Francois VanderMerwe.

Up next, the Sun Devils open up the Pac-10 regular season against the California Golden Bears on Friday, March 30 at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. The match is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. PT.
