Stanford Softball Defeats Ohio 5-4

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team improved to 23-5 on the year tonight with a 5-4 win over Ohio on the second day of competition at the Stanford Invitational II, held at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal were led by Jackie Rinehart who collected three hits on the night with two runs scored.
Ohio jumped on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the third.
But Stanford would roar back in the top of the fifth with four runs of their own. Alissa Haber got this started when she reached second on an error by the shortstop. Jackie Rinehart then hit an infield single, putting runners and first and third. After Rinehart stole second, Shannon Koplitz walked to load the bases. With one out on the board, Missy Penna singled to right field, scoring Haber. After a pitching change, Erin Howe singled up the middle, scoring Rinehart. A throwing error by the centerfielder scored Koplitz on the same play. Rosie Neill walked to load the bases once again. With two outs, Anna Beardman knocked a single through the right side, scoring Penna.
In the top of the sixth, Rinehart led off the inning with an infield single. A groundout by Koplitz moved Rinehart to second. Michelle Smith singled up the middle to put runners on first and third. An error by the shortstop on a ground ball by Penna, sent Rinehart home to score.
Ohio would fight back to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh but Stanford pitcher Becky McCullough would get Meagan McCutcheon to ground out to the third baseman to end the game and give Stanford the 5-4 win.
McCullough improves to 8-3 on the season allowing nine hits and two earned runs over seven innings of work with six strikeouts.
Penna, Howe and Beardman each picked up an RBI for the Cardinal with Rinehart led the team with three hits.
Stanford closes out tournament play tomorrow, facing Portland State at noon and UC Davis at 2 p.m.
