Softball Wins Stanford Invitational II Title

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team split a pair of game today and won the Stanford Invitational II with a 3-1 overall record over the weekend. The Cardinal dropped a 3-0 game to Portland State then rebounded to beat UC Davis 7-1 in the final game of the tournament.
In Stanford's first game of the afternoon against Portland State, pitcher Mandy Hill held the Cardinal scoreless allowing only five hits over seven innings.
PSU scored one in the fourth inning and two more in the top of the seventh and collected nine hits.
Becky McCullough picked up the loss for Stanford, allowing one run on five hits over five innings of work.
Stanford rebounded to pick up a 7-1 victory over UC Davis in the last game of the tournament.
UC Davis took the early lead off of a solo homer in the bottom of the second. The Cardinal would explode for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead for good.
With one out on the board, Shannon Koplitz drew a walk followed by a single to put runners on first and second. Missy Penna then singled to drive in Koplitz. Michelle Schroeder entered the game to pinch run for Smith. Erin Howe singled to score Schroeder. Rosie Neill reached base on an error by the shortstop which scored Penna.
UC Davis made a pitching change but the Cardinal stayed aggressive. Tricia Aggabao singled up the middle to score Howe then stole second. A wild pitch scored Neill and moved Aggabao to third. With two outs, Alissa Haber walked then stole second. Jackie Rinehart then reached base on an infield single which scored Aggabao. A subsequent throwing error by the pitcher scored Haber and bring Stanford's run total to seven.
Missy Penna picked up the win in the circle allowing only one run on four hits in seven innings of work. Her overall record improves to 16-2 on the season. Jessica Hancock took the loss for UC Davis, with five runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work.
The Cardinal are next in action on Tuesday night at Fresno State.
