Washington's Chu and Slovic Named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Players of the Week
March 26, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON doubles duo Daniel Chu and Alex Slovic have been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Players of the Week for Mar. 19-25, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Chu and Slovic, both seniors, reached new heights in Husky tennis this past week. The pair, who share the Husky career lead for doubles wins, became the first Huskies to reach 80 career doubles wins. Most, but not all, of their 80 respective wins have come as a tandem, and Slovic and Chu figure to wind up sharing the record as it will be hard to split up the successful pair for the rest of the season.
Win No. 79 came in Washington's 6-1 win over Nevada at a neutral site in Honolulu, Hawai'i, last Monday. Slovic and Chu defeated the Wolfpack team of Garcin and Tonelli at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Both players also added singles wins for good measure.
On Wednesday, the pair recorded their record-setting 80th wins against Hawai'i's Weber and Heinemann, both nationally-ranked singles players. Chu and Slovic, ranked 31st in the ITA Doubles Rankings, proved to have the better teamwork, taking the match 8-7 and UW went on to the 5-2 win.
The 27th-ranked Huskies (12-3) will open Conference play this week on the road at the Los Angeles schools. Washington faces No. 7 USC on March 30 and No. 8 UCLA on March 31.
This is the first career Player of the Week award for Slovic and Chu, and the second all-time for Washington.
