WNBA Hopeful Shay Murphy To Compete In 3-Point Contest At Men's NCAA Final Four
March 27, 2007
USC's all-time leading 3-point shooter, senior guard Shay Murphy, has been invited to compete in the women's 3-point shooting contest at the 2007 men's NCAA Final Four in Atlanta on Thursday (March 29). Murphy will then shove off for Cleveland to take her first steps toward a WNBA career as one of 51 athletes participating in the 2007 WNBA Pre-Draft Camp on March 30 and 31.
Murphy joins six other women for the State Farm Women's 3-Point Shooting Championship, to be held along with the annual slam dunk and men's 3-point contests at the Georgia State Sports Arena at 7 p.m. on March 29. The women's winner will then move on to face the men's winner in the Taco Bell Battle of Champions that same day. Also representing the Pac-10 in the 3-point contest along with Murphy is her friend Noelle Quinn, who hails from crosstown rival UCLA.
Murphy and Quinn will see plenty of each other this week, as the pair also are bound for the WNBA Pre-Draft Camp at Cleveland State University. The camp is designed to bring the nation's top prospects together for sessions involving drills, half-court scenarios and full-court scrimmages with coaches and general managers from all 13 WNBA teams in attendance to evaluate the athletes. The WNBA Draft is set for April 4, with the first round covered on ESPN2 and the ensuing two rounds covered on ESPNU and NBA TV as well as complete analysis and information available throughout on WNBA.com. The last Trojan to be drafted was Ebony Hoffman, who signed in the first round with the Indiana Fever in 2004. Sixteen USC players or coaches have been involved in the WNBA and four are currently active: Hoffman (Fever), Lisa Leslie (L.A. Sparks; three-time WNBA MVP), Tina Thompson (Houston Comets) and Karleen (Shields) Thompson (head coach Houston Comets).
Murphy has received increasing attention through the past two seasons, acknowledged as one of the top collegiate players in the game. A versatile guard who has coupled sharp perimeter shooting with a keen eye for grabbing rebounds, Murphy has tacked up 19 career double-doubles, shining as USC's leading 3-point shooter and top rebounder as a senior to tally 11 double-doubles in her final season as a Trojan. Already holding several places in USC history, Murphy also made an impact in the Pac-10 Conference and beyond. She has ranked in the top-10 in seven different Pac-10 statistical categories for the past two seasons, was the runner-up for the Pac-10 Player of the Year award, and has received national accolades as a Kodak/WBCA All-America finalist, Wade Watch and Wooden Award candidate and Lowes Senior CLASS Award finalist.
In her time at Troy, Murphy has moved up to rank No. 10 all-time in career scoring with 1,492 points, becoming one of only 20 Women of Troy to break the 1,000-point mark at USC. She also stands out as just the seventh Trojan to have repeat 30-point games in a single season. Her 3-point shot also holds her at No. 1 in USC's 3-point shooting charts with 181 career threes - 69 of which came this season, and 67 as a junior. She ranks No. 6 all-time in steals (234) and No. 8 in rebounds (722), averaging 8.4 rebounds per game as a senior. Murphy also held a 47-game double-digit scoring streak spanning the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, hitting double figures in all but one game for the Trojans as a senior.
