Cougar Decathletes Fare Well During Cal Multi-Meet First Day

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Washington State University decathletes Rickey Moody, Kyle Schauble and Justin Chambers are in third, eighth and 11th place, respectively after the first day of the decathlon at the Cal Multi-Meet Wednesday at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field on the UC-Berkeley campus.
Moody, a junior from Puyallup, Wash., is in third place with 3,860 points, behind the first-day leader, Stanford's Josh Hustedt (3969 points), and California's Steven Conrad (3895 points). Competing in their first decathlons, Schauble, a freshman from Kennewick, Wash., compiled 3400 points for eighth place among the 17 who began the competition, while junior Justin Chambers, from Albany, Ore., accumulated 3162 points for 11th.
Moody had the third-fastest finish in the opening event, the 100m dash, with his time of 11.00 seconds. Schauble broke the tape in a time of 11.25 and Chambers ran a time of 11.90.
In the long jump, Moody leaped 23-feet, 1 3/4 inches (7.05m), which was also third-farthest, with Schauble's leap at 22-5 1/4 (6.84m) and Chambers covering a distance of 20- 0 1/4 (6.10m).
Moody had the best shot put of the competition with a toss of 44-9 (13.64m), with Chambers putting the shot 34-0 (10.36m), and Schauble heaving the shot 29-3 1/4 (8.92m).
All three Cougs high jumped season-best heights with Moody clearing 6-3 1/4 (1.91m), Chambers clearing 6-0 3/4 (1.85m), and Schauble over the bar at 5-10 1/2 (1.79m).
In the fifth and final event of the decathlon's first day, Schauble ran a 400m time of 50.80 seconds, fourth-best on the day, with Moody running a time of 51.56, and Chambers finishing in a time of 52.43.
The final five events, the high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m run, begin Thursday at 10 a.m.
