Pacific Rallies to Defeat Cal, 7-5
March 28, 2007
Stockton - The California Golden Bears could not protect a 4-2 lead at Pacific, as the Tigers used a five-run sixth inning to erase the deficit and collect the eventual 7-5 victory over the Bears on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Bill Simoni field.
Cal (23-16) opens Pac-10 play on Friday at Oregon and continues league action at Oregon State for two games on Saturday and Sunday.
Pacific scored a run in the first inning when Jennifer Courtier's sacrifice fly to left field plated Gina Carbonatto, and took a 2-0 lead in the second when Casey Goldsand scored on a Carbonatto ground out to second baseman Vernae Sevilla.
Cal's offense finally started to click the third inning as they relied on Christina Schallig's bat to mount a comeback. After Julie Meyer drew a lead off walk, Morgan Siegel produced a single to left field to advance Meyer to second base. Three batters later Schallig delivered a three-run home run over the left field fence, lifting the Bears to a 3-2 lead.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth, Schallig connected for her second home run (third of the season) when her solo shot cleared the right field wall in the top of the sixth inning, giving Cal a 4-2 lead.
The two-run advantage would not stand long as Pacific generated five runs in the bottom half of the stanza to take a 7-4 lead. Carbonatto produced a key hit when her double off of Marissa Drewrey, who relieved starter Lauren Frankiewicz, scored two runs. Courtier followed with a single to left field to plate two more runners.
Cal nearly mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh when Meyer scored after Alex Sutton had grounded out to the first baseman, trimming the Tiger lead to 7-5 with two outs. But that was all the Bears could get in the frame, as Gina Leomiti grounded out to Tiger pitcher Chelsea Engle to end the game.
Schallig became the second Bear player this season to hit two home runs in one game (Sutton). She finished 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Meyer scored two runs. Frankiewicz took the loss for Cal to fall to 10-7 on the year.
