Cal in 15th After First Round of ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - California is in 15th place with a score of 20-over 308 Friday after the opening round of the PING/ASU Invitational at the Karsten Golf Course. The Golden Bears are only seven shots behind 10th place UCLA (301).
Second-ranked Arizona State leads its own tournament with a first-round score of three-under 285, while eighth-ranked Oklahoma State and fifth-ranked Pepperdine are tied for second at 290. No. 6 Vanderbilt (291) and No. 16 Texas A&M (294) round out the top five of 17 teams.
Behind six birdies and an eagle, Oklahoma State's Pernilla Lindberg leads the individual competition at four-under 68. Vanderbilt's Jacqui Concolino and Arizona State's Anna Nordqvist are tied for second at 69.
Sophomores Allison Goodman and Shannon Yocum lead Cal in a tie for 32nd at three-over 75. Goodman, who has paced the Bears in the last five competitions, was at four-over on the back nine but finished at one-under on the front nine on the strength of three birdies. Yocum also carded three birdies - two on the back nine and on the final par 4, ninth hole.
Cal freshman Christina Frick is tied for 63rd at 78, and freshman Sofia Janer is tied for 74th at 80 with the Bears' final counting score. Freshman Roseanne Niven is tied for 83rd at 81. Niven stood at one-over through her first 15 holes but shot a combined eight-over from holes seven, eight and nine.
The Bears begin the second of three rounds Saturday at 8:40 a.m. MT from the 10th hole.
