Softball Drops Pac-10 Opener to Arizona State

LOS ANGELES - UCLA dropped its Pac-10 opener, 6-0, to Arizona State on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium. The Sun Devils (38-7, 1-0 Pac-10) capitalized on four Bruin fielding errors and plated just two earned runs in the victory. UCLA falls to 24-8, 0-1 Pac-10, with the loss.
The Sun Devils struck first, sending seven batters to the plate and scoring one run in the top of the second inning. A dropped fly ball error opened the inning and put Jackie Vasquez on first base. After two walks and two strikeouts, Arizona State had the bases loaded with two outs and an infield hit by Jessica Mapes plated Vasquez to give ASU the 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, ASU doubled its lead on a home run to left field by Kristen Miller, her fifth home run of the season.
In the top of the fifth, two errors and a walk led to three more runs for the Sun Devils, giving ASU a 5-0 lead. The day finished with a seventh inning solo home run by Katie Cochran, her 11th on the season.
Krista Colburn posted the Bruins only hit of the day, a two-out third inning single through the left side of the infield. Junior pitcher Anjelica Selden allowed just three hits on the day, striking out 11 while taking the loss.
UCLA returns to action with a pair of conference games against Arizona this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday. All tickets for the weekend series have been allocated.
Saturday's game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by FOX Sports Net. It will air in Southern California on FSN Prime Ticket and will air at 1 pm on Sunday, April 1, 1 am that night and at 5 pm on Sunday, April 2.
