March 31, 2007

SEATTLE - The No. 16 Arizona State baseball team handed Washington its first Pac-10 Conference loss of the year Saturday, beating the Huskies, 11-5, at Husky Ballpark.

Washington, which has still won 13 of its last 15 games, fell to 15-10 overall and 4-1 in Pac-10 play. Arizona State improved to 22-10 for the season and 3-2 in the conference.

ASU reliever Matt Spencer (1-0), who also started the game as the designated hitter, got the victory, working two and one-third hitless innings. He also went 2-for-5 with a homer and three runs batted in at the plate.

Sun Devils left fielder Matt Smith nothed four hits and Brett Wallace had three to lead the ASU offense, which entered the game hitting a collective .359 and averaging more than 10 runs per game this season.

UW senior first baseman Curt Rindal went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead his team.

Husky starter Jorden Merry (5-2) saw his string of five consecutive victories come to and end. He allowed seven runs on 10 hits and no walks over six and one-third innings.

Washington took the early lead with a run in the first. Right fielder Andy Lentz dropped a one-out double down the left-field line and then scored on a two-out single from Rindal. The Dawgs added another run in the second when Joey Dunn led off with a single and eventually came across on a Bradley Boyer groundout, giving the UW an early 2-0 advantage.

Held scoreless through the first three and two-thirds innings, the Sun Devils posted their first run in the fourth when Spencer hit a two-out solo homer just over the right-field fence, cutting the Husky lead to 2-1.

ASU's bats woke up a bit more in the fifth. Andrew Romine led off with a double and, after moving to third on a bunt, scored on a single from Smith, tying the game at 2-2. Wallace followed with his 11th home run of the season to give ASU its first lead at 4-2.

The Huskies answered back in the bottom of the fifth. After Boyer reached on an error and Lentz singled, Matt Hague singled to drive in a run. After a wild pitch put runners at second and third, Rindal doubled, scoring both runners to put the Huskies back on top, 5-4.

The game swung back in the Devils' favor in the seventh as they scored five runs to take a 9-5 lead. Four consecutive one-out singles, including RBI hits from Wallace and Eric Sogard, gave ASU back the lead at 6-5. Catcher Petey Paramore followed with an RBI double to stretch the lead to 7-5 and Wallace, who came on to pitch in the sixth, singled to plate two more.

ASU scored two more in the eighth on a two-run single from Paramore, who drove in three runs in the game.

The Huskies and Sun Devils wrap up the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. The game will air live on KKNW AM-1150 and the broadcast is also available at
