Cal Baseball Wins Game Two of Series with 6-2 Victory Over Washington State
March 31, 2007
BERKELEY, CALIF. - The California baseball team broke away from a 2-2 tie by scoring a go-ahead run in the seventh inning on pinch hitter Taylor Grigsby's RBI single, and three runs in the eighth on clutch RBI's from Michael Brady and Charlie Cutler, to lead the Golden Bears to a 6-3 victory over Washington State Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond. Cal improved to 17-13 and 2-0 in the Pac-10, while the Cougars slipped to 15-12 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was freshman left-hander Sean Watson (1-1), who did an outstanding job in relief, replacing Cal starter Alex Rollin (6.1 innings, 10 hits, two runs, no walks, four strikeouts) and getting the final two outs in the top of the seventh inning, striking out Ryan Krauser and forcing Scott Suttmeier to earn his first collegiate win. Freshman right-hander Blake Smith threw the eighth inning (one hit, no runs, one strikeout) and sophomore closer Matt Gorgen struck out the side in the top of the ninth.
Similar to Friday's game, WSU scored first, notching a run in the top of the second on Krauser's RBI single. The Bears tied the contest with a run in the bottom of the second inning on Smith's run-scoring single. The two teams shared runs again, this time in the sixth inning. The Cougars' Greg Lagreid hit his second solo home run of the series in the top of the sixth, but Cal came back with a run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore left fielder Ryan Hanlon knocked in David Cooper, who had doubled, with a two-out single off of WSU starter Nick Ison (3-4, 6.1 innings, 10 hits, three runs, one walk, three strikeouts).
The Bears were able to seal the win when Grigsby came off the bench and had a run-scoring single up the middle in the seventh inning off of Cougar reliever Ross Humes (1.1 innings, four hits, three runs, one walk). Cal added three more runs in the eighth on Brady's squeeze bunt RBI, and Cutler's two-run single to center field.
The Bears recorded 14 hits on the day, led by junior second baseman Josh Satin (3-for-3) and Hanlon (3-for-4, RBI) with three hits apiece. Brady (2-for-3, RBI) added two hits for Cal. Krauser, Travis Coulter and Josh Ashenbrenner had two hits each for WSU.
The Bears will next play the Cougars in the third game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 1 at Evans Diamond. Cal had defeated WSU, 8-4, on Friday.
Washington State: Lagreid, solo home run in the sixth inning.
