Candice Wiggins Earns Third Kodak/WBCA All-America Honor
March 29, 2007
STANFORD, Calif.- Junior guard Candice Wiggins has been selected to the 2007 NCAA Division 1 Kodak/WBCA All-America Team, earning the honor for a third straight year while cementing her reputation as one of the nation's premier players.
This year's team marks the 33rd year of the longest running sponsorship in women's athletics. Selection committees in the eight WBCA regions select 10 of the top women's basketball players in the nation to be honored.
Wiggins, who was tabbed a Second Team Associated Press All-American for the third time in her career on Thursday, is also a finalist for the Wooden Award, Wade Trophy and Naismith Trophy.
Wiggins led the Cardinal in scoring (16.9 ppg) and three-pointers (82) in 29 games played and 28 starts. A 46-percent shooter from the field, Wiggins ranked second in assists (96) while snagging 4.1 rebounds per game. She scored in double-figures in 25 games and scored at least 20 points in eight games this year, including a season-best 30-point effort at Arizona State on Jan. 27 that resulted in her second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor.
An All-Pac-10 selection, Wiggins was named Most Outstanding Player at the Pac-10 Tournament, averaging 22.3 points per game while connecting on 14 of 25 three-point attempts.
A two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year, Wiggins enters her senior year with 1842 career points- a total that ranks fifth-best in school history and only 373 behind Kate Starbird's record of 2215. In addition, Wiggins needs to knock down only three more triples to become the school's all-time leader in that category.
Senior forward/center Brooke Smith was also recognized as a member of the Honorable Mention Kodak/WBCA All-America Team. She received the same distinction last season and picked up the second Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America honor of her career earlier this week.
Smith ranked second on the squad in scoring (13.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg) this year while leading the club with 120 assists. She also scored in double-figures a team-best 28 times. Smith was also voted to this year's All-Pac-10 squad, garnering that honor for a third straight season. She was also named to the All-Pac-10 Tournament team.
