BERKELEY - California won all six singles matches without dropping a set and took two of three doubles contests to beat Arizona 7-0 on Saturday at Hellman Tennis Center. The Golden Bears are riding a nine-match winning streak as Pac-10 play continues with Cal hosting Washington Friday at 1:30 p.m.
No. 4 Susie Babos played on the top court and won her seventh singles match in a row, beating Danielle Steinberg, 6-3, 6-3, and all the Bears followed suit in singles, from No. 13 Zsuzsanna Fodor on court two, earning a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Juliette Mavroleon; to Cristina Visico on court six, winning her eighth in a row, 6-1, 6-2, over Katie Orletsky. Stephanie Kusano raced through her match with Kasia Jakowlew on the fourth court, winning 6-1, 6-0, and fellow junior Marion Ravelojaona took care of Camelia Todorova, 6-1, 6-2, on court five.
Freshman Nina Henkel had a the toughest battle in singles, taking down Natalia Toporowska, on the third court, 6-4, 6-4 for her 13th win in her last 14 singles contests. Henkel and Kusano also ensured Cal's doubles point with their 8-4 win following Babos and Fodor's 8-1 victory.
'Overall this was a really good weekend,' said Cal head coach Jan Brogan. 'It's the beginning of our final segment for the spring, so it's a good start. We're looking to solidify the things they've been adding to their game over the year in this segment. I feel like the team has really good momentum right now and a lot of confidence.'
The Bears improve to 17-3 overall, 3-0 in the Pac-10, and are now 10-0 at home this season. Arizona falls to 8-10, 2-2. Cal is now halfway through a four-match homestand, hosting Washington Friday followed by Washington State Saturday at noon.
'The objective was to not play down to Arizona after yesterday and how well we competed,' Brogan said of the Bears' 7-0 win Friday over No. 19 Arizona State. 'I feel like we improved our focus yesterday. So today, on every court, we played more consistent on each point.'
