Stanford To Open Spring Season At San Diego Crew Classic On Saturday And Sunday

March 31, 2007

Stanford, Calif. - The 34th annual San Diego Crew Classic will be raced on Saturday and Sunday on Mission Bay. Stanford is the defending Copley Cup and Open 8 Champions of the event. The eight-month training cycle has been effective and efficient for the Cardinal in its preparation for the season. Gold medals in all fall races entered (including the Head of the Charles) have buoyed the morale and spirit of the team.

Tri-captains Kevin Baum, Nate Rooks and Donny Simkin will lead the varsity 8 with tremendous support from Mark Murphy, Silas Stafford, Ottavio Siani, Dave Creighton, and Alex Osborne. Sophomore Ariel Dixon will steer the eight. The open eight is led by Ben Briggs, Justin Brown, John DiCola, Jeff Cornelius, Ryan DuChene, Marco Caflisch, Ogi Zivojnovic, Graham Carroll and Micki Ream.

The Cardinal will be racing next at home on April 14 and 15 in the 5th annual Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic at Redwood Shores.

Notes: Jake Cornelius, 2006 captain and graduate will race on April 7th in London, England as a member of the Cambridge University eight in 'The Boat Race' vs. Oxford. Jake joins Jamie Shroeder (2006) and Jame Pew(1986) as the only Stanford University alumnae to race in this historic event.
