Stanford Softball Puts Up 15 Runs In Victory Over Oregon

Eugene, Ore. - The No. 11 Stanford softball team exploded for 15 runs today in a 15-4 victory over Oregon this afternoon at Howe Field in Eugene, Ore. The Cardinal improve to 26-7 overall, 2-1 in the Pac-10 while the Ducks drop to 36-4 overall and 2-1 in league action.

Stanford got things started in the top of the first inning when they rocked starting pitcher Melissa Rice for four runs. After Jackie Rinehart singled to lead off the inning, Alissa Haber followed up with a single of her own. Shannon Koplitz loaded the bases with the third straight single of the game. Michelle Smith then cleared the bases with a grand slam.

The Cardinal would score five more in the top of the fifth. It was Missy Penna's work at the plate that helped build the advantage. With two outs and two strikes against her, Penna connected on the second grand slam of the day, followed by a solo home run from Rosey Neill.

Stanford added six more runs in the top of the sixth. Erin Howe opened the inning with a solo homer to rightfield. With Rinehart and Haber on first and second, Koplitz singled, advancing to second on an error by the rightfielder, then went to third on the throw while both Rinehart and Haber scored. Penna would hit a single to send Koplitz home as well. Neill would hit her second homerun of the day, picking up two RBI.

Penna earned her 18th victory of the year, pitching six innings and surrendering four runs on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.

Jackie Rinehart was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for Stanford, while Alissa Haber was 4-for-4. Smith tallied four RBI while Penna picked up five on the afternoon. Neill picked up three RBI on two hits as well.
