Meloulli, Jensen Wrap Up At World Championships
April 2, 2007
Senior Larsen Jensen and former Trojan Ous Mellouli finished fourth in the 1500 free (lcm) and 400 IM, respectively, on the final day of the 12th Fina World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday.
Jensen's fourth-place time of 14:52.98 broke his own USC record of 15:04.06 (set in 2005). However, it was off the senior's American record time of 14:45.29, his silver medal effort from the 2004 Olympic Games.
On Sunday, Poland's Mateusz Sawrymowicz won in 14:45.94 and was followed by Russia's Yury Prilukov (14:47.29), England's David Davies (14:51.21) and Jensen. Jensen was in fourth for most of the race. All are among the top seven fastest ever in the race, as was world record holder Grant Hackett of Australia, who finished seventh. Former Trojan Erik Vendt was also in the 1500 final, finishing eighth (15:07.76).
Mellouli of Tunisia, who won gold in the 800 free and silver in the 400 free earlier in the week, finished just out of the medals in the 400 IM with his 4:11.68. Mellouli was swimming third halfway through the race, but fell to fourth after 200 meters, where he finished. Mellouli is the sixth fastest ever in the race. Four of the other five were swimming in the final, including the three swimmers who finished ahead of Mellouli.
America's Michael Phelps (a world record 4:06.22) and Ryan Lochte (4:09.74) finished 1-2 while Italy's Luca Marin was third (4:09.88). Former Trojan Tamas Kerekjarto of Hungary was eighth (4:17.32).
Next up for Jensen, Vendt as well as sophomore Rebecca Soni and former Trojans Klete Keller, Kaitlin Sandeno and Amanda Weir, is the United States vs. Australia 'Duel in the Pool' set for April 3 at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in Sydney, Australia. NBC Sports will air the meet on April 21, from 2-3 p.m. (EST), and April 22, from 4-6 p.m. (EST).
