Stanford's Anne Yelsey Named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week
April 2, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior Anne Yelsey has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Mar. 26-Apr. 1, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Yelsey, a native of Newport Beach, Calif., chalked up three straight-set singles wins last week and a 2-1 doubles record as Stanford defeated No. 56 UNLV, and scored Pac-10 wins over No. 42 Arizona and No. 19 Arizona State. Yelsey is currently ranked 37th in the nation in singles.
On Mar. 28 vs. UNLV, Yelsey rolled to an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over Kristina Nedeltcheva in the No. 2 singles position. Yelsey and partner Lindsay Burdette, the 34th-ranked doubles team, lost in a minor upset to the 35th-ranked team, Elena Gantcheva and Nedeltcheva at No. 1 doubles, but it would be the only blemish of Yelsey's week.
On Friday, the Cardinal swept Arizona, 7-0, and Yelsey handled the Wildcats' Juliette Mavroleon, 7-5, 6-1 in her standard No. 2 spot. She was an 8-4 winner in doubles against Kasia Jakowlew and Natalia Toporowska.
Next time out, Yelsey led the Cardinal to a vital 5-2 victory over the Sun Devils Saturday afternoon. She put her experience to good use, handily defeating ASU's 29th-ranked freshman Nadia Abdala, 6-2, 6-1. Yelsey and Burdette scored another upset, taking out ninth-ranked Roxanne Clarke and Kady Pooler by an 8-4 count.
Yelsey has now won seven-straight matches and is 10-4 in dual play, 11-5 overall.
Stanford (16-1) recently reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the ITA Rankings after a brief stint at No. 3. The Cardinal are tied for first in the Pac-10 with a 3-0 record. The Cardinal remain at home to face Washington State on Friday, Apr. 6 and Washington on Saturday, Apr. 7 in Pac-10 duals.
This is the second career Player of the Week award for Yelsey, and the fourth all-time for Stanford.
