#17 Men's Track & Field Heading to Austin for 80th Texas Relays
April 3, 2007
The UCLA men's track and field team, ranked 17th in the first Trackwire outdoor rankings of the season, will send a large group of field event athletes, as well as some distance runners and sprinters to the 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this Thursday through Saturday.
The meet features some of the finest track and field athletes collegiately and professionally and marks the first time in three years that UCLA has competed at the meet.
The Bruins will run a team comprised of Laef Barnes, Brandon Johnson, Mike Haddan and Austin Ramos in the distance medley relay race on Friday. Freshman Stan Griffin will be the lone sprinter in an individual event as he will compete in the 100m on Saturday.
Barnes and Haddan will compete in the 'A' section of the 1500m on Friday, while freshman Marlon Patterson will run in the invitational mile on Saturday. Senior Henry Hagenbuch, who is coming off of an incredible steeplechase race at Stanford, will run in the steeple on Friday evening.
In the pole vault, seniors Mike Landers and David Murphy will compete in the 'A' section on Saturday, while on Friday, sophomore Dustin DeLeo and junior Chris Bencomo will vault in the 'B' section. Landers currently holds the No. 1 vault mark in the country at 17-6.50.
Junior Michael Johnson will compete in the 'A' section of the triple jump on Friday. Junior Joel Tuosto will also compete on Friday in the 'A' section of the long jump. Junior Dominique Easterling was slated to compete this weekend in the triple, but will instead hold off until the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invite next weekend.
In the throwing events, three Bruins will throw in the 'A' section of the discus on Friday evening - senior Jason Rider and juniors John Caulfield and Greg Garza. Garza threw the No. 3 mark in the country last weekend at Cal/Nevada with his lifetime-best toss of 197-10. Freshman Darius Savage will also compete on Friday in the 'B' section of the discus.
Caulfield, Savage and freshman Nick Robinson will throw in the 'A' section of the shot put on Saturday.
Junior Chris Burbach rounds out the Bruin competitors at Texas as he competes in the 'B' section of the javelin on Friday.
All but four of the athletes heading to Texas have achieved the regional standard in their respective events and that foursome will look to qualify this weekend to add to UCLA's total of 21 regional qualifiers.
