Ashley Houghting Named All-Pac-10
April 3, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington sophomore Ashley Houghting was one of 16 gymnasts named to the All-Pac-10 gymnastics team, commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday. The honor is the first for Houghting, and the first for any UW gymnast since 2004.
The All-Pac-10 team is determined by a combination of each gymnast's regional qualifying score, reflecting their season-long performance, and their score in each event at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships. The top-six all-around scorers are included on the all-conference team, as well as the next three-highest scorers on each of the four individual events.
Boasting a regional-qualifying score of 9.930 on vault that is tied for fifth in the nation, Houghting cinched her first-career All-Pac-10 honor with a 9.950 on vault at Saturday's Pac-10 meet, sharing conference championship honors with UCLA's Tasha Schwikert. A native of Welland, Ont., Houghting already holds UW's career record for vault wins with 17 (breaking the old record of 12), and with 25 total victories, is just two shy of Washington's career top-10 overall.
The honor is the second this week for Washington's gymnastics team, which learned earlier this week that head coach Joanne Bowers had been named Pac-10 Gymnastics co-Coach of the Year. It was just the third time ever that a first-year coach had been so honored by the conference.
Houghting and Bowers will lead the Huskies into the NCAA West Regional Championships at Berkeley next Saturday, where the top-two teams will earn automatic berths to the NCAA Championships in Salt Lake City Apr. 26. For more information on UW gymnastics, visit www.GoHuskies.com.
