April 4, 2007
BERKELEY - The California women's track and field team earned a No. 13 national ranking in the first Trackwire top 25 poll of the outdoor season that came out this week. Coming off a successful indoor season that ended with a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Golden Bears have started off the outdoor season strong by compiling a slew of NCAA regional qualifying marks and times through the first few meets.
Fellow Pac-10 team Arizona State is ranked No. 1 in the women's poll.
Trackwire also released its latest women's Dandy Dozen, which ranks the top athletes in each event. Six Bears are among the Dandy Dozen this week, with junior Alysia Johnson, the 2007 NCAA indoor champion in the 800-meter run, garnering Cal's highest ranking at No. 2 in the 800.
Cal's other athletes in the Dandy Dozen are senior Carrie Johnson, who's ranked No. 5 in the hammer, sophomore Inika McPherson, who's ranked No. 5 in the high jump, junior Cassandra Strickland, who's ranked No. 6 in the triple jump, senior Kelechi Anyanwu, who's ranked seventh in the discus, and sophomore Emilee Strot, who's ranked 12th in the discus.
Cal competes at the 113th annual Big Meet this Saturday at Stanford.
