Bears Best Cardinal, 3-0

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team dropped a 3-0 decision in the opening game of 2007 series with Cal tonight, after allowingthe Golden Bears a three-run fifth inning. Alex Suttondrilled a three-run homerun over the right center field fence and carried the Bears to theirfirst Pac-10 win of the season. Stanford falls to 26-8 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10 with the loss, while Cal improves to 24-19,1-3.

Cardinal pitcher Missy Penna started the game strong, striking out six Bears on the first run down the order andallowing just one hit in the first four innings. Stanford posed its biggest threat in the second inning, putting two onwith one out, but left Penna and Michelle Schroeder stranded at second and third.

Cal slapped all three runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning, using three hits and the deep homerun bySutton to putthe Cardinal at a late deficit. Vernae Sevilla singled to start the Golden Bear rally and was replaced at first byJulie Meyer on a on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Morgan Siegel singled to left to keep Cal alive and put twoon for Sutton.

Cal out-hit Stanford 5-3, with Penna, Alissa Haber and Michelle Smith accounting for Stanford's three hits.

The Stanford-Cal series continues tomorrow in Berkeley with first pitch set for 3 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field.
