Jacobson Scores Twice as Cal Defeats Fiji, 3-1

April 5, 2007

ORINDA, Calif. - Andrew Jacobson scored two goals for California and the Golden Bears hung on to a 3-1 exhibition victory over the Fiji national team despite playing most of the game with 10 men on Thursday night at Miramonte High School. Junior forward Javier Ayala-Hil recorded a goal and an assist for the Bears, who earned their first win of the exhibition season to run their record to 1-1-1.

'It's always a great experience to play a senior national team from another country,' Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. 'We really appreciate Fiji coming to the Bay Area. They showed great heart and great commitment to go forward tonight. We just happened to be very good in front of goal in the first half. I thought it was a really good game for our players and hopefully it's a great game for Fiji as well as they prepare for World Cup qualifying.'

Fiji, in its second game of its tour of the San Francisco Bay Area, broke out to a 1-0 lead when forward Josaia Bukalidi scored on a breakaway in the ninth minute.

The Bears tied the match at 1-1 in the 13th minute when Ayala-Hil scored. Goalkeeper Nicholas Lawrence parried Ayala-Hil's initial shot from point-blank range, but the forward tapped in the loose ball.

Ayala-Hil later added an assist when his cross found Jacobson near the top of the Fiji penalty area. Jacobson fired past Lawrence to give the Bears a 2-1 lead in the 21st minute.

Cal was still ahead 2-1 when defender Josh Leon received a red card for a foul on a Fiji player in the 24th minute.

The Bears still had its share of possession and earned a corner kick in the 28th minute. Jacobson headed in freshman Hector Jiminez's ensuing corner, and Cal led, 3-1.

At halftime, Cal had outshot Fiji, 7-5, and the team from Oceania had forced Bears freshman goalkeeper Stefan Frei to make just one save.

An inspired Fiji team took the field in the second half, when the visitors outshot the Bears, 7-1, and tried to make the most of their man advantage.

But while Fiji had much of the possession, it only put one more shot on goal, which Frei saved. Junior goalkeeper Justin Myers played the last 30 minutes for Cal and did not make a save.

Forward Roy Krishna, who came off the bench early in the second half, had one of Fiji's last shots, which went wide right in the 88th minute.

Cal's exhibition season continues when the Bears take on the University of San Francisco at 7 p.m. on April 13 at USF's Negoesco Stadium.
