Bears Complete Third Sweep In A Row

April 6, 2007

BERKELEY - Behind five straight-set victories in singles, the fifth-ranked California women's tennis team shut out Washington, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Golden Bears won all three doubles matches as well. Cal improved to 18-3, 4-0, while Washington fell to 3-15, 0-5.

On the top court in singles, No. 4 Susie Babos increased her winning streak to eight matches as she knocked off Aleksandra Malovic, 6-1, 6-0. After losing the second game in the first set, Babos won the next 11 games in a row to earn the victory.

Another Bear extended her winning streak besides Babos. Cristina Visico won her ninth consecutive match when she beat Melinda Wong, 6-1, 6-1.

No. 19 Nina Henkel, competing on the second court, won her 14th match in her last 15 contests on Friday. Henkel defeated Mathilde Cor, 6-1, 6-1, in the first singles match completed on the day.

Claire Ilcinkas clinched the victory for the Bears on the sixth court. In the first set of her match against Allison Rainey, Ilcinkas held a 5-2 lead, before Rainey came back to win the next two games. Ilcinkas would win the set, 6-4, and then shut out Rainey in the second set, 6-0.

Marion Ravelojaona earned a win on the fourth court in three sets. After dropping the first set, 6-2, she came back to take the next set, 6-3. In the third-set tiebreaker, Ravelojaona trailed early, but came back to win the set and the match.

In the first set of Stephanie Kusano's match against Joyce Ardies, Kusano was down 4-2. She won the next four games and took the set, 6-4. After losing the first game in the second set, Kusano won the next five games and the set, 6-2.

The second-ranked doubles duo of Babos and Fodor got a pretty good fight from Cor and Ardies, as the Bear tandem never led by more than two games until it held a 7-4 lead. Cor and Ardies won the next three games to tie the match at seven, before Babos and Fodor won the tiebreaker.

The other two doubles matches weren't nearly as close. On the second court, Henkel and Kusano shut out Simpson and Wong, 8-0. Ilcinkas and Bojana Bobusic were tied at two with Rainey and Malovic before they won the next six games to win, 8-2.

Cal completes its four-match homestand tomorrow at 12 p.m. when the Bears square off against Washington State.
