Darius Savage Busts Out at Texas Relays With Monster Discus Throw
April 6, 2007
Freshman Darius Savage had a huge day in the discus on Friday at the Texas Relays as he upped his lifetime-best in the discus by nearly 20-foot (200-5) as he competed in both the 'A' and 'B' sections of the discus.
Savage, who is also a defensive lineman on the Bruin football team, started the day off with a 12-foot lifetime-best to win the 'B' section of the discus with a toss of 193-4. That mark improved on his previous best (181-11) and moved him into the top-10 in the country, but he wasn't done yet as he was invited to compete in the 'A' section for a few more throws.
Savage then threw a bomb of 200-5 to finish second overall, tacking on another seven feet to his lifetime-best. His top mark moved him to No. 3 in the country and No. 6 all-time at UCLA. He is also just 1.5 feet shy of Bruin great John Godina's freshman record (201-10).
Teammate Greg Garza also had a big day in the discus as he improved on his lifetime-best by nearly two feet to finish third to Savage with a mark of 199-4. Garza, who had been ranked third in the country heading into the Relays with a mark of 197-10, now ranks fourth in the nation. He also joined an elite group of throwers in the UCLA all-time top-10 at the No. 9 spot.
Sophomore Laef Barnes ran just off his lifetime-best in the 'A' section of the 1500m to finish fifth overall with a season-best time of 3:50.70. Junior Mike Haddan, also running in the 'A' 1500m, finished 10th in a time of 3:51.71.
Freshman Stan Griffin, the sole individual sprinter at the Texas Relays, finished seventh in heat one and 32nd overall in a time of 10.83.
On Saturday, Savage will return to compete in the shot put, along with junior John Caulfield and freshman Nick Robinson. Seniors Mike Landers and David Murphy will also be in action as they compete in the 'A' pole vault. Freshman Marlon Patterson will run in the invitational mile and the Bruins will field a distance medley relay team.
