Huskies Drop Fourth Straight, 11-2, To UCLA

April 6, 2007

LOS ANGELES - UCLA scored in each of the first four innings and cruised to 11-2 win over the Washington baseball team Friday night at Jackie Robinson. The loss was the Huskies' fourth straight.

UCLA (15-14 overall, 5-0 in the Pac-10) remained unbeaten in conference play and took a 2-0 series lead with the win. Washington fell to 15-13 overall and 4-4 in the Pac-10.

Catcher Ryan Babineau went 4-for-4 with two homers and three runs scored to lead the Bruins. Starting pitcher Tim Murphy (2-1) picked up the win in his fourth start of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings.

Husky starter Jorden Merry (5-3), who saw a string of five straight victories end last weekend, gave up seven runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings in the loss.

UCLA took the early lead with a run in the first. With runners at second and third with no outs, Brandon Crawford's groundout drove in a run, but Merry managed to get out of the inning with no further damage with a strikeout and a popout.

Washington bounced back to tie the game with one in the second. Senior first baseman Curt Rindal led off with his second career triple and then scored on a single from designated hitter Trevor Petersen.

However, UCLA went back on top in the bottom of the second as a two-run homer from Babineau made it a 3-1 Bruins lead.

In the third, the teams traded runs. In the top of the inning, Washington shortstop Brian Pearl singled and eventually came in on a single from Michael Burgher. In the bottom of the third, Alden Carrithers singled, moved to third on a double from Crawford and scored on a groundout. However, the Huskies prevented any further runs when Burgher, the UW center fielder, threw out Crawford, trying to score on a flyout, at the plate.

After the UW failed to score in the top of the fourth, UCLA added three more in the bottom of the inning as Jermaine Curtis' two-out single scored a pair, stretching the Bruins' lead to 6-2. After a hit batter, Geoff Nichols replaced Merry on the mound and Crawford hit the first pitch he saw for an RBI single, making it 7-2.

Babineau led off the sixth with his second homer of the night, sparking a four-run inning for UCLA that included two bases-loaded walks.

The Huskies and Bruins wrap up the series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game. A live broadcast of the game will air on KKNW AM-1150 as well as on the internet at
