Stanford Wrestlers to Compete at US National Championships

Stanford, Calif. - Five Stanford wrestlers headed to Las Vegas, Nev. this week to compete in the US National and FILA Junior National Championships. Competition begins today at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Junior Tanner Gardner will compete in the US National ?Qualifying Tournament today, which is designed ?to narrow the US Open entries to eight. The top eight finishers from the qualifying ?tournament will continue to tomorrow's US National Championship where they will ?join the previous top-eight ranked wrestlers and compete for the National ?Championship. Gardner, who will compete at 55 kg, became the second two-time All-American in Stanford history this season, after posting a school record 42 wins, capturing his first Pac-10 title and finishing seventh nationally at 125 pounds.
Four other Cardinal wrestlers, including Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Zack Giesen, will compete at the FILA Junior National Championships. Giesen, who will compete at 84 kg, will be joined by redshirts Justin Paulsen (60 kg), Lucas Espericueta (70 kg) and ?Anton Scherba (79 kg). The top six placewinners at the event qualify for the 2007 ?FILA Junior World Team Training Camp and World Team Trials in Colorado ?Springs, Colo., May 20-26.
