#12 Baseball Sweep Aside Stanford, 14-1
April 7, 2007
Tempe, Ariz. - Looking to sweep Stanford for the second straight time at Packard Stadium, starter Brian Flores threw 8.1 strong innings, striking out seven to lead the Sun Devils to a 14-1 victory and a three game sweep of the Cardinal. Flores allowed only four hits and an unearned run, retiring 14 in a row at one point, to improve to 6-1 on the year. The win puts ASU at 26-10, 7-2 in Pac-10 play.
The Sun Devil offense was relentless from the outset, scoring at least a run in the first five innings. Petey Paramore had a sac fly in the first, and Stanford allowed another run on a throwing error to put ASU up 2-0 early.
In the second inning, Tim Smith doubled in two runs, the Brett Wallace singled home another to make it 5-0. A Smith RBI ground out in the third made it 6-0, before Kiel Roling's ninth homer of the year, a two-run blast, made it 8-0 after four.
The Devils broke it open in the fifth, scoring five times to make it 13-0. Smith doubled home a run, then Paramore brought two more home with a single. Roling then put the exclamation point on the series, sending a shot to deep left field that finally came to rest on the parking lot on the other side of Rio Salado Parkway. The mammoth two-run homer was Roling's second of the game and tenth of the season.
Not to be outdone by the offense, Brian Flores threw a gem on the hill. Flores kept the Stanford hitters off balance all afternoon, allowing only an unearned run in the sixth. All four hits he gave up were singles. Matt Spencer came on to record the final two outs of the game.
Tim Smith was 2-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Petey Paramore, Kiel Roling and Matt Hall all added two hits. Jason Jarvis pinch hit in the eighth and doubled down the line for his first collegiate hit.
The Sun Devils continue their homestand next weekend, hosting the Washington State Cougars in a three-game Pac-10 series beginning on Friday night.
