April 7, 2007
EUGENE, Ore. - Fresh off its comeback victory yesterday, the California men's tennis team rolled past Oregon, 6-1, Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears swept the three doubles matches to start the day and won five of the six singles matches.
Cal (13-7, 3-1) jumped out on the Ducks, winning the opening doubles matches all by the score of 8-5.
In singles, three of the Cal victories came in straight sets. Daniel Sebescen and Ken Nakahara were two of the Bears to win in straight sets, and it was also the second singles wins of the weekend for both. Nakahara beat Geoff Embry, 6-2, 6-2, while Sebescen got the best of Mike Myrhed, 6-1, 6-3. On the top court, Pierre Mouillon got back in the win column when he knocked off Marcos Verdasco, 6-4, 6-4.
Kallim Stewart also won his second match of the weekend against Oregon. Stewart's match against Eric Pickard went to a third set, with Stewart taking the first, 6-3, and Pickard winning the second, 6-4. In a close third set, it was Stewart coming away victorious, earning the 7-5 win.
The third court featured a third-set tiebreaker between Eoin Heavey and Ric Mortera. Mortera won a tough first set, 7-6, before Heavey rebounded and won the second, 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Heavey came away with the 10-6 victory.
The Bears return to Berkeley next weekend for their first match at the Hellman Tennis Center since sweeping Stanford on March 10.
