No. 5 Cal Extends Winning Streak With Win Over Washington State
April 7, 2007
BERKELEY - The fifth-ranked California women's tennis team extended its winning streak to 11 as the Golden Bears swept Washington State, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center. The victory completed Cal's four-match homestand. The Bears shut out their opponents in all four of those matches.
'The girls came out very focused,' Cal head coach Jan Brogan said. 'I think the idea was to come out and really focus and respect your opponent. Both of these teams (Washington and Washington State), especially Washington State, really compete hard every time we play them.'
All six singles matches ended in straight sets. Due to a rain delay, no doubles matches were played.
On the No. 1 court, fourth-ranked Susie Babos extended her winning streak to nine with her victory over Ekaterina Burduli, 6-2, 6-3. After Babos took the first set, Burduli hung with the reigning NCAA singles champion in the second set. With the set tied at three, Babos went on to win the next three games to take the match. Babos' victory also clinched the win for Cal (19-3, 5-0).
The first win of the day came on the sixth court where Claire Ilcinkas handled Anastesia Opata, 6-1, 6-1.
Making her second appearance of the spring on the second court, No. 19 Nina Henkel defeated Amy Toth, 6-3, 6-2. Henkel has now won 15 of her last 16 singles matches and has also won her last eight in a row.
Another Bear extending her winning streak was Cristina Visico, who notched her 10th win in a row on Saturday. She beat Aleksandra Stefanova, 6-3, 6-3. Visico's winning streak began on March 9 in Cal's win over Oregon.
Marion Ravelojaona's victory over Aleksandra Cekic marked her sixth in a row. Her straight set win ended with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
On the third court, Stephanie Kusano dominated in her match against Marjolein van de Ven. Kusano only lost three games in her straight-set victory, as she won by the score of 6-1, 6-2.
Cal heads to Los Angeles next weekend to face No. 7 USC and No. 10 UCLA. The Bears face the Trojans on Friday, April 13, at 1:30 p.m. and the Bruins the next day at 12 p.m.
