Stanford Drops Tough Road Contest at Cal, 9-1

Berkeley, Calif. - The Cardinal softball team dropped a 9-1 decision to California today at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley. The Bearsout-hit the Cardinal 11-5 and recorded three homeruns to take the 2007 series between the two teams, 2-1. Stanford fallsto 27-9 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-10 with the loss, while Cal improves to 25-20, 2-4 Pac-10.
After retiring the Golden Bears in order in the first inning, the Cardinal allowed its rival to bat around in thebottom of the second inning. Designated player Gina Leomiti started the inning off with a walk, moved around tothird on a ground out and a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Vernae Sevilla drew another walk for Cal withtwo outs and Julie Meyer tagged a two-run shot over the left center field fence to make it 3-0. Morgan Siegel followedwith a single to right and Alex Sutton added two more to the Golden Bear tally with her second homerun of theweekend, making it 5-0.
In the third inning, Bernice Masaniai led off with the third Cal homerun of the game, drilling a solo shot to centerfield. Cal added another run in the fourth inning, when Sutton came around from first on a double by Leomiti.
Stanford's Alissa Haber spoiled the Cal shutout in the top of the fifth inning, drilling a homerun to right field.The blast was Haber's second on the season and the tenth by a Cardinal freshman this year.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cal sealed the win with another pair of runs. Christina Schallig singled and Leomitiwalked to start the inning, and advanced to second and third on a ground out by Masaniai. With two inscoring position, third baseman Katie Vickers drove a sharp hit to right field to pick up two RBI and end the game.
The 11 Bear hits were the second-most this season allowed by the Cardinal. Haber went 2-for-2 to lead Stanford forthe second-straight game.
Stanford returns to action on Wednesday, taking on the Saint Mary's Gaels at Smith Family Stadium in a 7 p.m. start.Conference play for the Cardinal resumes on Friday in Tucson, Ariz. when the squad takes on the defending NationalChampion Arizona Wildcats.
