Women's Tennis Sweeps Doubles Despite Falling to USC, 6-1

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 25 Arizona State Women's Tennis team fell to the No. 7 USC Trojans, 6-1, Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. The Sun Devils are now 10-9 overall and 3-3 in Pac-10 play. The Trojans improved to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in the Pac-10.

The 12th ranked doubles team in the nation, seniors Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke, earned their 19th overall win of the season as they defeated Lindsey Nelson and Julie Smekodub, 8-3. Senior Sabrina Capannolo and junior Jessica Leitch improved their record as they topped Judy DeVera and Amanda Fink, 8-7 (5). Senior Rebecca Rankin and sophomore Laila Abdala completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory over Dianne Matias and Sarah Fansler. Rankin and L. Abdala are now 9-3 in dual doubles this season.

In singles, the Devils put up a fight taking two matches to three sets. Pooler was topped by Fink 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. L. Abdala was also defeated in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to Matias. In the No. 1 spot, Capannolo was defeated by Nelson 7-6 (5), 6-0.

The Sun Devils continue Pac-10 play Saturday, April 14 as they host the Oregon Ducks. The match is set for noon PT at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.
