Washington's Alex Slovic Named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week
April 9, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON senior Alex Slovic has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Apr. 2-Apr. 8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Slovic, a native of Pancevo, Yugoslavia, scored two singles wins over two of the Conference's top athletes last week, as the Huskies lost a 4-3 dual to California but rebounded with a 6-1 win over Stanford for their first Pac-10 win of the year.
A two-time All-Pac-10 first team selection, Slovic showed the form that has made him one of the winningest Huskies in history. Against the Golden Bears, Slovic hammered Pierre Mouillon, the nation's 27th-ranked player, 6-2, 6-1. He and partner Daniel Chu, Washington's all-time winningest doubles team, added another victory with an 8-4 decision over Tyler Browne and John Pettit which helped the Huskies take the doubles point, 2-1.
On Saturday, Slovic battled Stanford's Matt Bruch, the 2006 Pac-10 Singles Champion, into a third-set super-tiebreaker. Slovic had lost the first set in a tiebreak, but responded with a 6-4 win in set number two. With UW having already clinched the victory, the two played a 10-point tiebreak to decide things. Tied at 9-9, the Husky senior scored the final two points to earn his 90th career win.
The Huskies (13-6, 1-3 Pac-10) look to even their Conference record this weekend when Arizona and Arizona State visit Seattle for two dual matches.
This is the second career Player of the Week award for Slovic, but his first as a singles player. Slovic and Chu won as a doubles team on Mar. 26 of this year. It is the third award all-time for Washington.
