April 11, 2007
The No. 14/17 UCLA men's track and field team will play host to over 1000 athletes and over 25 universities, as well as a multitude of professional athletes Thursday through Saturday as they host the fifth annual Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. The namesakes of the meet, Rafer Johnson and Jackie Joyner-Kersee will be in attendance on Saturday as they will be honored during the Invitational section of the meet.
The three-day meet starts off on Thursday with the first day of a heptathlon and decathlon, as well as the hammer throw competition. This is the first year that the Invite will hold a hep/dec competition. The meet also features a distance carnival on Friday night.
Nearly the entire Bruin team is scheduled to compete as freshman David Klech debuts in the 110m hurdles on Friday. Brandon Johnson, also on Friday, will open up in the 400m hurdles and will also run on the Bruin 4x400m relay on Saturday.
Mike Landers, the No. 1-ranked pole vaulter in the country, will also compete on Saturday in the invite section of the vault.
A special mile run will also be held on Saturday and that event will feature 2000 Olympian Michael Stember, who currently trains with distance coach Eric Peterson. For the past two years, this meet has produced at least one sub-4 minute miler and that trend will look to continue this weekend.
