Bidleman Wins California Invitational Decathlon
April 12, 2007
AZUSA, Calif. - Washington senior Blake Bidleman became just the second Husky in 21 years to top 7,000 points in the decathlon Thursday, clinching his first-ever decathlon win at the California Invitational Multi-Events in Azusa, Calif. Bidleman and UW heptathlete Liz Fuller both competed at the two-day meet, which kicks off a busy week of action for the UW track and field teams.
Bidleman's winning mark of 7,006 points made him just the eighth Husky all-time - and just the second since 1986 - to top the elite 7,000-point mark, and was the first 7,000-point decathlon by a UW athlete since All-American Jacob Predmore scored 7,426 points in 2000.
The Inglemoor High School graduate set career-highs in six events, including four of the first five events Wednesday en route to a career-high day one score of 3,646 points.
With winds building to a peak of 40 miles per hour throughout the day on Thursday, Bidleman extended his early lead over the 23-man field with a career-best 14.74-second mark in the 110-meter hurdles, then held on through the next three events before cinching the win - and an NCAA provisional-qualifying berth - with a career-best 4:25.93 in the meet's final event, the 1,500-meter run.
In addition to his first-ever 7,000-point decathlon, Bidleman also clocked his first sub-50 second time in the 400-meter dash (49.92 seconds), and his first-ever 40-foot outdoor toss in the shot put (44-0 ¾).
While Bidleman was in the process of earning his first-career decathlon win, teammate Liz Fuller was en route to a fourth-place finish in the seven-event heptathlon. Fuller's score of 4,845 points included a career-best mark in the 100-meter hurdles and was the fourth-best mark in UW history.
The multi-eventers' efforts were just the start of a busy weekend for Washington's track and field teams, which will compete in split-squad throughout the next three days at both the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal.
