Los Angeles - Right-hander Tyson Brummett (6-4) threw his fourth complete game of the season to lead the UCLA baseball team past crosstown rival USC, 5-2, Friday evening at Dedeaux Field. Brummett pitched his second complete game in as many career appearances against the Trojans, allowing just two runs off seven hits.

UCLA (16-16, 6-1 Pac-10) has won eight of its last 10 contests and has won three consecutive games against USC (19-16, 2-5 Pac-10), dating back to last season's series victory. The Bruins were led offensively by catcher Ryan Babineau (2-for-3) and designated hitter Cody Decker, who finished 1-for-4 with a two-run home run, his team-leading seventh round-tripper of the season. Brummett struck out four hitters and issued three walks, raising his season strikeout total to 67.

USC right-hander Brad Boxberger (2-3) allowed five runs off five hits in six innings and struck out five while issuing four walks. Designated hitter J.J. Owen led the Trojans at the plate, hitting 2-for-4.

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead with two outs in the top of the first inning. Decker took the first pitch he saw from freshman right-hander Brad Boxberger and belted it over the left-center field fence. Decker's blast brought home Crawford from first base.

The Trojans cut UCLA's lead in half, 2-1, with a sacrifice fly by right fielder Anthony Vasquez in the bottom of the second inning.

The Bruins added three runs in the top of the fifth, an inning that ended in an overturned call and controversy. UCLA scored on a two-RBI double off the left field wall by third baseman Jermaine Curtis and added one more run on Crawford's line-drive base hit to left. With two outs, right fielder Gabe Cohen grounded a ball to the left side of the infield and Crawford was called out running from second to third base for runner's interference. The play was initially ruled a base hit by the umpires, before the officiating crew reversed the call.

UCLA returns to action at USC on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Saturday's contest will be televised live by Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket, as Bill MacDonald and John Jackson will call the action. The two schools conclude the three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game Notes: Tyson Brummett's complete game was the second of his career against USC; Brummett led the Bruins past the Trojans, 12-1, in a complete-game effort on May 14, 2006...Cody Decker's first-inning home run was his sixth in UCLA's last 10 games and his team-leading seventh of the 2007 season...Brandon Crawford finished 1-for-3, and has hit safely in 26 of UCLA's 32 games...with a win on Saturday or Sunday, UCLA can clinch victory in the 2006-07 Lexus Gauntlet Challenge; the Bruins are five points shy of the 57.5-point total needed to win the 18 sport head-to-head competition.
