April 13, 2007
LOS ANGELES - Tyson Brummett threw a complete game Friday to lead the UCLA Bruins to the 5-2 victory over the host USC Trojans in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. Brummett gave up two runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Bruins improved to 16-16 overall and 6-1 in Pac-10 play, one game behind leader Arizona. The Trojans fell to 19-16 on the season and 2-5 in conference.
Jermaine Curtis and Cody Decker had two RBI each for the Bruins.
Freshman right-hander Brad Boxberger (2-3) took the loss in his first start as USC's No. 1 starter, allowing five runs on five hits in six innings of work.
Brandon Crawford walked with two outs in the first and Decker followed with his seventh homer of the season, drilling a two-run homer to left center. The Trojans scored their first run in the second when Anthony Vasquez brought home Robert Stock on an RBI sacrifice fly to center.
UCLA added three runs in the fifth. Justin Uribe walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice from Tim Murphy. Ryan Babineau singled to right to put runners at the corners and Curtis delivered a two-run double off the wall in left. Alden Carrithers then walked and Crawford made it a 5-1 lead with a single to left. Gabe Cohen appeared to hit an infield single for what would have been the fourth run of the inning, but Crawford was ruled out for interfering with USC third baseman Hector Estrella's attempt at the ball.
The series continues tomorrow with a 1:30 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. game time for Sunday. Saturday's game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net with audio available at usctrojans.com.
